BACK to the Silvermine
River.
Ridgefield's
pastor, Rev. S.G. Goodrich, wrote in 1800 that the Silver
Spring was "most remarkable... The water is very cold and
heavy". Others have attributed medicinal qualities to its
water. The spring rises unobtrusively on a small forested
lot beside the John Waterman House, 0.85 miles south of the
old red schoolhouse at the head of Silver Spring Road (off
Route 35). Sadly, the water is no longer safe to drink due
to growths of algae in the spring.
A
wetland extends both north and south from the spring along
the east side of Silver Spring Road. After forming a pond
at the intersection with St. John's Road, the brook flows
south into Wilton and joins the East Branch of the Silvermine
River.
