Georgetown

The community of Georgetown (where the northeast corner of Wilton touches the southwest corner of Redding) is dominated by the old Gilbert and Bennett factory, where the first woven wire sieves were produced. Their manufacturing operations in Georgetown continued from 1830 until 1989.

Upstream from the plant is the 12-acre Factory Pond. This pond supplied power to the plant, but its water was continually replenished from Ridgefield's Great Pond, which Gilbert and Bennett owned for that purpose. A small tributary, Gilbert & Bennett Brook enters Factory Pond from the east.

The dam washed away during the 1955 flood.
