Norwalk
Harbor opens into Long
Island Sound between Manresa
Island and Calf Pasture
Point, a popular City
Park. The harbor maintains
a width of half a mile
or more from the Sound
up to its head at Veterans'
Memorial Park, the scene
of Norwalk's annual Oyster Festival and many other cultural events.
The
Norwalk River enters the
harbor near South Norwalk's
busy Washington Street
district. The Maritime Aquarium and the Norwalk Museum (occupying the former
City Hall building) are
also in this area. To
the east, beyond Veterans'
Park, is Mill Pond, a
body of water that's connected
to the harbor by a narrow
neck. In 1709 a mill was
constructed here to take
advantage of the power
supplied by the tidal
flow of the water through
this neck. This source
of energy was used well
into the 20th century.
