The Great Swamp

The "Great Swamp" was highly prized by Ridgefield's earliest settlers. One of the town's earliest maps shows how the swamp was divided among its residents, giving each family a section where it could harvest wood and other useful commodities.

The Great Swamp is located east of Danbury Road and Prospect Ridge. It is bounded by Ivy Hill Road on the south and extends beyond Farmingville Road on the north. It has been called the 1000-Acre Swamp, though it is now about half that size. Ridgefield's main sewage treatment plant is on the western edge of the Swamp.
